Count Down to November 7th

Just when you thought the GOP couldn't possibly sink any deeper into the depths of sleaze, they lower the bar even further. Is there anything this gang of silly, hypocritical, half-witted bastards won't do to get elected? Apparently not. The television ads that are being commissioned by the Republican National Committee in the countdown to November 7th are some of the most disgusting in American political history. At least the infamous Willie Horton commercial of 1988 made an attempt to be subtle - at least that's how it appears in hindsight. With these miserable fools, subtlety has gone right out the window. Given their history, are you surprised? And with only one week to go, the possibility of the White House creating some kind of hideous October surprise in order to divert our attention, even something that gets a handful of American service people killed, is very real. Remember that George W. Bush is already responsible for the murders of at least a half a million people in Iraq. What's three or four more bodies to this murderous little thug? Keep your eyes wide; he and Karl Rove are going to try something.

Ah, we do live in interesting times, do we not?

Imagine what this country will look like in two years with another republican majority controlling both houses of Congress, mindlessly rubber-stamping the demands of the most overtly corrupt administration in the history of human folly. By the time it's all over, you won't even recognize America. In case you missed it at the movies, the original intention of the Founding Fathers - "...just about the smartest sons-of-bitches that ever lived" in the words of the great Molly Ivins - was that the legislative branch of our government provide oversight with respect to the executive - with the judicial acting as sort of a referee. That situation effectively does not exist anymore - it has been rendered inoperative by the majority party. The rumbling you hear is the sound of Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin doing somersaults in their graves.

As much damage as the Bush Mob has been able to do since 2001, just imagine what will happen if they are allowed a final two years with the GOP in charge of the House and the Senate? Think about it: For the six long years they've been pounding away at our Constitution, bearing in mind that they always had another re-election or mid-term to face - they were actually being politically expedient! That is why this administration must be placed in check and, if possible, removed from office by means of the constitutionally viable process of impeachment. And the only way that's going to happen is with a democratic victory next week; otherwise you might just as well kiss your once-great nation goodbye. If you think I'm over-reacting then, please, by all means vote republican next week. If you don't believe the situation is as dire as I've portrayed it then, obviously, you haven't been paying attention these past six years. Really, kids, of the one-hundred and ten national elections in our history, 2006 is the biggest no-brainer of them all.

A leader who invades another nation on the pretext of cooked-up evidence which results in the genocide of hundreds of thousands of people is, by definition, a war criminal. That is the very real fact that almost everyone is ignoring. That is the very real fact that we all must come to terms with.

We'll meet again
Don't know where
Don't know when
But I know we'll meet again
Some sunny day....

George W. Bush was able to commit horrific crimes against humanity because he knew - or, rather, he thought - that he'd never be called to account for his misdeeds because of the existence of a corrupt, incompetent and supposedly undefeatable Republican-controlled Congress. I'll lay it out for you as clearly and concisely as I can: the future of United States prestige and credibility in the world absolutely depends on our insistence that he will indeed be held accountable for what he's done to this country and this planet. Otherwise, all the proclamations about ours being "a nation of laws and not of men" is nothing more than an empty slogan, on par with, "Wheaties is the Breakfast of Champions". Empty, meaningless rhetoric.

Everything rides on 7 November. Vote as if your whole future depends on it because it really does, folks. It really does.

Pray for peace.

Tom, for a high school dropout you have an incredible grasp on history. I wish you were teaching my kids history classes instead of the mediocre nitwits they have now. It was the same when I was in school. The founding fathers were presented as anything but brilliant, competent statesmen. I did finish high school with a 25% abscence rate and a 90-something gpa, but dropped out of college. Anything I've learned of real value has been outside of a classroom. (Including how to make some major mistakes in my life. But if others can benefit from my errors then I feel it isn't a total loss. At least that's what I like to think.)
I do have hope for my kids though. They are starting to ask me questions about politics. The stuff you are writing about gives me a lot to say to them that they sure aren't learning in school I thank you for that!

So now we wait and hope....

Hi Tom, once again you are right on target and at this point all we can do is cross our fingers, hope and pray. We know that this election is going to be crooked, rigged and manipulated. In Ohio Blackwell is already at his tricks of eliminating ballots and removing voters from the rolls. All polls point to the fact that America wants a change and if this does not come to pass, I am afraid that our only hope will be for concerned Americans to take up arms and storm the bastards out of Washington.

Dear Charles,
Yes, all we can do is keep our fingers crossed and our hands folded! Thanks for the kind words, pal! How is everything in the Windy City?

Dear Fearless Flower,
I'll try to stop by later on this day...
All the best,
Tom

I'd say tom is doing more than merely wait & hope. We should all follow his lead and spread the word, encourage people to vote (as many might think it is beyond hope) help at your voting precinct, pray, be an astute presence, whatever...

The truth will get you freedom - spread it around.

Hi Tom, another bullseye!

Something has been nagging at me though over the past couple of days...Bush didn't sign a bill giving him sole right to declare martial law whenever, and for whatever reason he chooses to - for no reason.

Bush and Cheney absolutely have NO intention of relinquishing their power! They KNOW they're up for trial and conviction if they do - it won't happen.

If the houses go Democratic on November 7th, martial law will be declared immediately. If the Republicans maintain control (which is what I expect, the fix is already in)..then it will be 2 more years of obscene gains for the wealthy, and arm twisting of the world's leaders. Then just prior to the next election a disaster of some kind will happen, it will be declared then. He will be president until he and his cohorts tire of the game.

They will never face trial.

If I had a dollar for every time I've said "Vote on November 7th", I'd have a lot of dollars!

You are so right, Tom, people have got to get out and vote in this election. I shudder to think about the future if we don't all vote, encourage our friends, family, coworkers to vote, give someone a ride to their polling place to vote, etc. Fingers crossed!

Tom, I told you about 5 years ago on AlterNet you could not vote Green because every vote would be needed to stop Bush and Co. It is so nice to read all your posts here and on AlterNet. I look for them all the time. You have a great way of putting things. You are right, if we do not win this election our country and our way of life is gone. I have gotten ulcers over this coming election and I have no idea what I can do here in Tom DeLay's home town. Their TV Ads terrible, out & out lies. The woman write in Candidate for DeLay's seat comittied election law violation already. It is really scary here, no newspaper or TV station will tell the truth about anything, so how can people learn the truth? Maybe we can retire to some small town in a state that votes for its people and will not let them starve to death when Social Security and Medicare is done away with. There wise they might as well pass out the over dose of sleeping pills to get rid of us. People do not believe it will happen, but two more years will make it happen, so very one needs to vote.

I feel you pain Tom in this situation, and I am just cynical enough to believe that the fix is indeed in. I've voted absentee figuring they can't steal that vote...but I guess they can just dump it. It will be very nerve-racking to wait for next week's results and I do hope for the best...but I fear the worst. These people cheat...and they are very good at it...obviously. I think we have a Bastille day in our future...and we will have to be very strong for what we will have to do. I know many bloggers that see this for our future too...let's just hope Lady Liberty prevails.

You rant about the Republican Congress and rightly so, but to me the greatest worry is our Republican-controlled courts. One glaring example was the 2000 Florida debacle and that was before Bush packed the court with even more lockstep right wingers, but just as important if not more so is the appleals judges who are Bush appointed a*** kissers. We have already seen the fallout when Bush loving appeals judges have ruled for the most corrupt regime in this country's history and they are in the running for worldwide corruption in my lowly opinion. The only reason Hitler outranks Bush is because Hitler had his stormtroopers but with the bill he signed just last week the stormtroopers are just lacking a Horst Wessel martryr to become a reality

Also, Thursday evening, November 2, 2006, on HBO: Hacking Democracy. Here is the blurb from HBO's schedule:

"Is American democracy safe in the age of computers? This cautionary film looks at the very real risk of hackers altering vote counts in public elections--and exposes the vulnerability of computers which count approximately 80% of America's votes in county, state and federal elections. Filmed in 2004-05, this documentary tells the story of Bev Harris, a Seattle publicist/writer whose watchdog group uncovered evidence of mishandled voting records and suspicious voting machine malfunctions. Harris' crusade took the group--consisting of computer experts, activists and political candidates from both parties--from her home computer (where she found a computer system blueprint accidentally made public) to Tallahassee, FL for a 'mini-election' that proved just how easy it is to hack the vote."

tom- these folks not only do not have the capacity for abstract thought- they are unable to come up with any original thought or idea on their own. they have to revert to the base and the primal emotions to get a reaction because they have not evolved (which is probably why they don't believe in it.) i have no doubt that more sleaze, lies, and smear tactics will be coming in the next week. i refuse to watch.

What bothers me is that Bush is totally unconcerned with this upcoming election's possible results.

I agree that the fix is in.
But I hope I'm wrong.

That shrill, nagging sound in his voice lately does indicate that he may be on the defensive (not that I can stand to listen to more than a few bleats).

I hope that the anonymous poster is wrong, but he or she has made a significant point. What do bullies do when someone else is winning the game?
Change the rules. Destroy the ball and wreck the playing field.

Our game may be up.

This era of government has been bad enough for two lifetimes. And I do mean all levels and functions -- all three federal branches, especially this god-forsaken Congress we've come to loathe since assuming power in the mid 90's -- and even state level politics, where they've gone about redistricting and have orchestrated smears against established opposition leadership. The priority of the GOP money-backed machine has become not winning the majority vote, but rather, disenfranchising through any means an opposition's right to vote and representation. *That* folks is about as bad as it gets in a democracy, and this is what this GOP leadership has been all about in recent years. The really scary part for me is that one-third American public who blindly places their trust and allegience, and money to these fascist terds. Here's hoping they go extinct as well...

My friend and I were recently talking about the prevalence of technology in our day to day lives. Reading this post makes me think back to that discussion we had, and just how inseparable from electronics we have all become.

I don't mean this in a bad way, of course! Societal concerns aside... I just hope that as memory becomes cheaper, the possibility of transferring our memories onto a digital medium becomes a true reality. It's a fantasy that I daydream about almost every day.
