COUNTDOWN: ONE MORE YEAR!

Oh, I would just love to be able to sit here on this cold winter morning and tell you that we only have 365 days left to endure what's left of the administration of the disgusting, half-witted, murderous little guttersnipe the American people were foolish enough to inaugurate as their chief executive seven years ago today. Alas, that was not meant to be. Just our luck: 2008 would have to be a leap year. Shit!

366 days left of this unprecedentedly corrupt and incompetent White House. I wouldn't be writing these words had the Democrats shown some profiles in courage and removed George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney from power via the constitutionally mandated means of impeachment. Never before in our history has the overt criminality of a president and vice-president been so blatantly and perfectly obvious. The "high crimes and misdemeanors" of these two make the misdeeds of Richard Nixon and Spiro Agnew a generation ago seem like harmless, school boy pranks.

The very fact that the Democratic leadership in the House and Senate allowed this dreadful situation to continue (virtually unchecked) should be held against them - and no doubt will be. What people have got to realize is the fact that the once-great party of Franklin Delano Roosevelt is no longer part of the solution - they're part of the problem - and they're now in the process of cheerfully proving this point. They seem hell-bent on handing the nomination to the only candidate in their ranks who is almost certain to lose at the polls in November. The fact that Hillary Clinton can't win the deep south and large parts of the mid and northwest (and quite possibly her home state of Illinois), the fact that every opinion poll has her losing handily to every potential Republican opponent (unlike most of her Democratic counterparts) - the fact that most people can't stand her - seems not to have paid even a courtesy call to their brains. But that's another topic for another day....

The general consensus of opinion is thus: Why impeach the First Fool and Dead-Eye Dick at this late stage in the game? How much more damage can they possibly do in one short year? The answer to that question is somewhat of a no-brainer: They can and will do more damage - a whole hell of a lot of damage - between now and January 20, 2009. It is not going to be "one short year" as some seem to be suggesting. It is going to be one, very long, extremely long, EXCRUCIATINGLY LONG year. We cannot be expected to wait 366 days - 8,784 hours (I did the math!) - to begin cleaning up the mess these criminal jackasses have made. We need to begin as soon as possible. The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step, as they say.

And what of the crimes too numerous to even cite? From the violations of the Geneva Convention to the war profiteering; from the looting of the National Treasury to the political persecutions; from the assault on the First Amendment to the desecration of the Constitution....The next president of the United States needs to remember the political price that Gerry Ford paid for pardoning Dick Nixon in September of 1974. Serious, criminal investigations need to be initiated the moment the oath of office is taken one year from today. This country's very salvation depends upon nothing less than we, the people making damned sure that George W. Bush is remembered in history as the first former chief executive to go to federal prison and that he will die there.

No man or woman is above the law. An example must be made of the hundreds of people - within the Bush/Cheney administration and without - who willingly committed crimes against the American people during the last seven years. The evidence of criminal wrong doing is voluminous; the smoking guns are so plentiful they've blocked out the sun. If these crimes go unpunished, our former standing within the international community of nations will never be regained. If these crimes go unpunished, our creed of being a nation of laws and not men will be exposed as a fraud. If these crimes go unpunished, The Constitution of the United States will be forever tarnished. If these crimes go unpunished, we we'll never be forgiven by the world - nor will we ever be able to forgive ourselves.

I cannot emphasize this enough, campers! What you have here inside the Executive Mansion at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is a cabal of some very hideous bastards and one extremely nasty bitch (Hello, Condi!) The damage that they have done to this country can't even be assessed. The youngest people among us will be paying for the Bush Mob's dreadful mismanagement of America's social and economic infrastructure for the rest of their lives and, more than likely, the lives of their children as well. This is a problem that is not merely going to go away with a change of administrations - this is a problem that we'll be dealing with forever. If you are unable to perceive the repercussions of George W. Bush's stupidity by now, you will by January 20, 2009 - count on it. As Maureen Dowd astutely observed in this morning's New York Times:

"Next to the cool, strong euro, the dollar is a comparative runt in the world's currencies. The weak dollar lets foreigners snap up real estate in Manhattan. It is striking that the Bush scion, who tried so hard to do the opposite of his father, also ends up facing the prospect of a recession in his final year in office. Maybe if the president had spent the trillion he squandered in the Iraq odyssey on energy research, we might have broken the oil addiction."

Indeed we might have. It boggles the mind imagining where we might be today had a President Albert Gore taken the oath of office on January 20, 2001. That he actually won the election of 2000 and that the presidency was denied him because Jeb Bush and Katherine Harris were able to illegally remove 57,000 black people from the list of eligible voters in the state of Florida only compounds one's rage.

It's a sure bet that a President Gore would not have ignored the warning: "Bin Laden Determined To Strike In The U.S." and might very well have prevented the carnage of September 11, 2001.

It's a pretty safe wager that President Al Gore would not have committed the stupidest foreign policy blunder in American History by invading a country that was a threat to no one.

It's fairly safe to assume that President Gore would not have foolishly squandered a multi-trillion dollar surplus with a tax cut for a class of people who already had more money than they possibly knew what to do with.

It's not too much of a stretch to conclude that President Gore would not have built up a debt so astronomically unmanageable, it would have to be taken over by the Chinese.

It's not an unreasonable guess to conclude that President Gore probably would not have ordered persecutions of his political enemies nor would he have filled the Department of Justice with third-rate, ideological hacks.

Yeah. One doesn't have to be a Rhodes Scholar to conclude that the world in general and this country in particular would be a much happier place today had we never known the names of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. The very thought of enduring another 365....I mean, 366 days (SHIT!!) of this nightmare of an administration is almost too horrible to even comprehend. The fact that all the pundits are predicting that this will be a Democratic year is of little solace. They have forgotten the Dem's positive genius for taking a fine bottle of twelve-year old scotch and turning it into donkey piss.

Maybe the party of FDR will finally show some courage and end this outrage that is being committed against the American people. Maybe this year pigs will finally learn how to fly.

Don't hold your breath.

AFTERTHOUGHT:
Yesterday I visited the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Library and Museum in Hyde Park, NY. If you're ever up in that neck of the woods, it can't be recommended enough. There is a link to their website here on "The Rant". You'll walk away from the place feeling better about America. It's therapeutic!

Hello, Christina.

peace....

Sadly, the next president is almost certain to have been bought and paid for by the same forces that put Bush in. Virtually all of them feed at the same trough - as is true of most members of congress.

If we had a congress that believed in the constitution, they would already have impeached bush.

Will the next President open a criminal investigation relating to the reckless behavior of Bush and Chenney? Please! Don't hold your breath.

And will the people in Congress ever remove their tails from between their legs and bark? Unfortunately, it's not going to happen no time soon.

We, the people, must take back our constitution!! We have several options to bring forth a change. For starters, whatever happened to a march on Washington?

we can only be so mad at them! for it is us that lets them do what they do. all these voices of discontent but where are all the rallies and marches makeing them heard.

It looks like Tom doesn't realize that this country is doomed to become a dictatorship-slowly but surely-.As John Harragin wrote in his comment "Virtually all of them feed at the same trough-as is true most members of congress".

I'll put it another way, Tom: AIPAC runs the show. You think gore would have been a better president, don't forget who he chose (or to be more accurate: has been chosen) to be his vice president : joe lieberman.
You know him, don't you, and what he thinks about the Iraq war, and who he is supporting now.
You were optimistic when obama won in Iowa, Ok. Do you remember what you wrote about reagan, not long ago, " In the grip of Ronniemania"?
Please google " obama+ronald reagan" and watch the video at openleft.com "obama's admiration of ronald reagan".

So, please ,Tom,don't fool yourself.

While I agree with your opinions with regard to Joe Lieberman, I have to take gentle issue with Barack Obama's statement on Ronald Reagan. I don't think was was, as many are implying, "praising" him. He was merely saying that Reagan "changed the trajectory" of American politics. You don't have to be an admirer of the Gipper (and I most certainly am not)to honestly concede that he certainly did just that, did he not?

Cheers!

Tom,

I grow weary of people saying it's too late for impeachment or it won't do any good.

The fact is, impeachment is the ONLY remedy for the direction our government is going in. The Constitution is clear about mandating impeachment; stating holders of high office "SHALL" be impeached, not "may, when politically expedient."

If these criminals are not impeached, I fear where we will go from here as a country. I hope that by the time people are outraged to the point of all saying "NO MORE!" it will still be possible to do something. I fear a revolution. The parallels are too numerous to ignore (been listening to Naomi Wolfe.)

I've been going to the Roosevelt Estate for awhile now too, on the advice of a good friend (hey, it was you!) The rose garden by Franklin and Eleanor's tombs was exquisite in late October, fragrant and in full bloom when all the other flowers were already finished. I stood in meditation for awhile in front of their graves and asked them how they would feel if they were living in these times. FDR told me how important it is to keep a sense of humor and Eleanor told me never to become tired of trying to make things better. Good advice, isn't it?

Hi Tom,

One of your best Rants yet. I agree whole heartedly that Bush and Co can still do a hell of a lot of damage in the one year remaining.

And after a lifetime of voting as a democrat, I am totally disgusted with them. I was so pleased when Pelosi was elevated to the status of the first female Speaker of the House, and she has literally PISSED away what she could have done. I could hardly believe her naievete of a month or so ago when she said that she had thought the Republicans, knowing of the countrys anger over the war would go along with the Democrats rather than digging in their heels. And this wretched woman STILL refuses to consider impeachement!

If we are not careful, this entire bunch of Hitler clones will get out of office completely free and with no consequences for their crimes against not only humanity, but also this country.

I sadly wonder what happen to the passionate idealism of the 60s. We got out there and physically demonstrated against the Vietnam war and numerous other ills of society at the time. I went to a candlelight vigil early in the Iraqi invasion and only 4 people showed up -- all of us were over 50 yrs old. When did the baby boomers get so lazy and non-chalant about the direction of this country? Are college students so myopic about their futures that their time is too valuable to demonstrate for our rights, our soldiers' lives, the lives of the Iraqi citizenry, and so much more that has gone wrong. The politicians do what they do because we let them. We need to take back this country and it needs to start with the impeachment of Bush & Cheney.

Tom,

After seven years of feeling hopelessness and despair over the course our country has taken, my husband and I recently took a vacation to Gettysburg and DC. We came away from that journey feeling a new sense of hope and patriotism for our country. When we stood in the spot where Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address, we had chills and tears at how those few words fit our world today. Lincoln must have felt much as we do today that he was facing impossible odds for holding this country in one piece. We were surprised to learn that the audience at that address was completely silent after he spoke and Lincoln thought his speech was a total failure. The next day, he learned in the newspapers, that the audience was stunned by his words and felt that it was the greatest speech of all times (and why all of us had to memorize it in school!)

In DC we saw the original Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and all of the Amendments and we realized that it has always been a fight to hold this country together and to keep the forward momementum going. What we are experiencing seems small compared to the Civil War, but little did anyone know what was ahead when that war began. Perhaps we don't know what is ahead of us, but we must have courage to face it and be prepared to fight for what has taken us so long to attain.

In response to Waimea Widow regarding protesting in the streets I can only say that I have signed petitions, answered polls, voted and even went to some poorly attended rallies, and I have come to to the conclusion that NO ONE is listening to us. NOT ONE elected official or candidate is listening to us. The polls all say the majority of us want out of Iraq, but the Presidential candidates won't even take that stand. We aren't apathetic - we are ignored.

We need election reform now. The folks in office will never patrol themselves, so we the people must begin a movement with a petition to enforce open, publically funded elections with severe term limits for every position. ALL of these old white haired men need to be sent packing NOW. If anyone knows of such a movement, please direct me to their website. I want change, but don't know how to accomplish it.

Thank you for speaking for so many of us, Tom. And for all who dispair, take a historic journey and get inspired!

Peace to all,

Jo_Reside@yahoo.com

Thank you for the kind words, Jo. I, too, stood on the spot where Lincoln gave his Gettysburg Address. It is definately a powerful and moving feeling just to stand there.

I'll tell you a funny story. When I was a kid going to Catholic school. I misbehaved one day and the nun in charge of me, Sister Caroll, Made me stay after school and memorize Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address as a "punishment". Some punishment. I'm so greatful to the old gal. I can recite it, word for word, to this day!

peace....

In response to, 'Where are the marches & rallies?'

I went to the demonstration in NYC at the '04 RNC. It was huge - as many people as Woodstock. The news reports I saw were all the same:

'The RNC kicked off, bla, bla, bla... There were also some protesters, thousands of people...'

Every media outlet that I checked regurgitated this same lie of omission. In defense of the 'liberally biased' NY Times, they had a sentence about a week later correcting the number in the crowd to about 400,000.

On the other hand, a couple of months ago, my sister Cathy and I went to a poorly attended march arriving about a half hour late. We marched down a barricaded Broadway alone together between a thousand cops. The cops were opening the road behind us and at times we had a motorcade of cop cars flashing behind us. I didn't want to get shot by a stun gun. While most of the cops were friendly and happily collecting overtime occasionally some ill tempered cop would tell us to get off the road, but Cathy kept insisting we get back in the road and she made New York City wait for us. Like so many things happening these days, it was surreal.

Its almost as if the media is used as a device of terror, churning out propaganda that in effect cultivates fear, apathy and hopelessness in the very population it pretends to serve. If that were at all true, one would think that most media outlets are owned by military industrialists...

Turn off your TV. Free yourself!

I certainly hope that this once great country makes it through the coming year. That said, it seems to me that those that have their voices heard are far better able to purchase their "mouth pieces" and have their puppets articulate favorable propaganda on their behalf than will ever see media coverage.
Grandpappy Prescott Bush lead a junta against FDR and came to the conclusion that fascism would not be achieved suddenly. So, the tactics changed. Whittle away at "freedoms" in small ways so as not to gain attention or resistance.
Here's a link to one of the "puppet masters". He is currently seeking immunity for the telecoms that have been violating American citizens' 4th amendment rights, but the mouth pieces will cave, since we're at "war" (though it's really an occupaton).
Read his bio...it's chilling:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Cheney

Lets give him the same justice that was given to those that served Hitler and were found guilty of the highest crimes at Nuremburgh.
The rest of the planet watches. It deserves nothing less.
