Newt the Hoot

It isn't very often that one happens upon a politician as delightfully sleazy as Newt Gingrich. The man is a walking, talking caricature. Thomas Nast - the legendary nineteenth-century political cartoonist most famous for his drawings of New York's corrupt Boss Tweed - would have loved the Newtster! This is the same guy who had eighty-four ethics charges filed against him during the four years he served as speaker of the House of Representatives.

Now our man Newt is attempting to pass himself off as a model of religious virtue. Isn't that a scream? It's amazing how quickly some politicians not previously known for their religiosity are
so eager to embrace the religious right with both arms when it suits their purposes. Ronald Reagan is a great example of this. In 1968 as governor of California, he signed into being what up to that moment was the most Liberal abortion law in the nation's history. When he sought the White House a few years later, Reagan, who never belonged to any church and rarely attended services, was transformed into the Almighty's very own representative on earth.

Newt Gingrich is now undergoing a metamorphosis very similar to the gipper's. After all, this is the guy who served his first wife with divorce papers as she was lying in the hospital, recovering from cancer surgery. You would think that anyone with half-a-conscience would have waited until the poor woman was at least back in the comfort of her home before doing something like that. For all he knew she could have literally been lying on her death bed at the time. One never knows after cancer surgery. No doubt about it, old Newt is one mean son-of-a-bitch!

And hypocrite? Let us not forget that while leading the effort to remove Bill Clinton from office for lying about an affair with a half-witted intern, Newt was having an extramarital affair with a member of his staff whom he would eventually marry after divorcing his second wife. In an interview last week with the Christian Broadcasting Network he blamed his philandering on his patriotism. The man is just so amusing.

To John Edwards' credit, when he was busted having an affair behind the back of his cancer stricken wife, he at least had the decency to slither away into obscurity, eternally shamed. Newt Gingrich, by contrast, is not ashamed. He's patriotic. As Jack Parr used to say, "I kid you not"

It's also amus
ing to listen him out on the talk show circuit as he cynically clouds the waters regarding the nationality of Barack Obama. He has cheerfully placed himself in the middle of the Birther movement by saying that the prez was raised in Kenya by a Kenyan father and was taught from his earliest days to despise the British. The fact that Obama was not raised in Kenya and only met his father once doesn't mean a thing to Newt. Let's face it: The truth is just too inconvenient. Why bother with fact when there are volumes of lies waiting to be exploited? Newt fancies himself a historian. His specialty seems to be historical fiction. My advice to him would be to find another line of work. Gore Vidal he ain't.

Newt Gingrich is one of those "lowest common denominator"
politicians that litter the pages of American history. Like old Joe McCarthy, he is unable to appeal to the best in his fellow Americans because there is not a heck of a lot of substance there. But all that aside, Newt wants to be the next president of the United States so badly he can hardly contain himself. He's hell-bent on seizing the nomination at the GOP convention in 2012 - and nothing and NOBODY is going to get in his way. This is gonna be good!

All of the talk this week about the possibility of the government being shut down has reminded many people what a petulant crybaby Gingrich really is. Do you remember the last time that happened? It was back in 1995. Newt was upset with President Clinton for making him sit in the rear of Air Force One during an overseas flight. When he refused to give up his seat at the back of the plane for a white man....

Oh, wait, I'm confusing him with Rosa Parks, I'm sorry....

To make a long story short, Newt was so humiliated at having to sit in the plane's rear section, when he got back to Washington he literally shut the entire United States government down for a few days. What does that tell you about the former speaker? Between you and me, I would consider a seat anywhere on Air Force One - even the luggage room - to be a great honor. The fact that the seating arrangements were an affront to Newt's ego speaks volumes about the man's character. If I were Clinton I would have stuffed the hideous little bastard in the fuselage.

And now he wants to be the "leader of the free world".

It doesn't speak well of this republic that a corrupt, self-absorbed little freak like Newt Gingrich has gone as far as he has in politics. It speaks even less of the people of Georgia who sent him to congress for so many terms.

Newt definitely has his base, the "Newtsies" as the late, great Molly Ivins called them. But that does not necessarily translate into enough votes to be elected to the presidency. For a party that has moved so far to the fringes of American politics in the last three decades, a nomination for Gingrich, while improbable, is not impossible. The one thing (and only thing) that can wreck his chances is his personal life. Remember this is the "family values" mob. It doesn't matter in the least to these jackasses that he is as crooked as they come. What matters is the fact that he's been married three times. It won't look very good on his resume. If anything destroys him in the primaries, it will be that.

In spite of these negatives, I hope he
gets the nomination. A campaign as brilliantly twisted as that ought to be good for oodles of laughs!

The ticket will have to be balanced. Newt is a man, he's white, he's smart - and he's relatively sane. His ideal running mate would be a screamingly crazy black woman who is also dumber than dog shit.
Unfortunately for him there are no women of color serving in congress as Republicans. Butterfly McQueen is dead. Their only option is Michele Bachmann. That would be the icing on the freaking cake. Can you even imagine?

Oh, please, fate! Oh, please! Oh, please! Oh, please!

Dismiss the political savvy of Newt at your peril. He has enough chameleon blood to offer a palatable choice to the right-wing of the Republican Party, and enough "straight-talkin Uncle Newt" to fool the voters. There are plenty of people who believe that Bachman, Palin and other under-qualified potential candidates are genuine choices for high office. The collective memory for Newt's previous escapades has faded and no longer diminishes his chances. He is busy making the talk-show rounds recreating a marketable identity. See also "turd-polishing".

My advice? Guano futures.

Tom, what an interesting "flip-flop" of what normally and traditionally would be viewed as being a conscientious objector (CO), or an individual who has claimed the right to refuse to perform military service on the grounds, among other reasons, religion; essentially asserting that their religion, or religious beliefs, trumps their patriotism. It seems Newt has claimed, albeit in a very unique way, the very opposite! How utterly "Bizarro World" is that?! Action Comics was well ahead of its time, wouldn't you say?

Anna, over at The Mills River Progressive, had a great take on the Newtster last week. It's hilariously gut-wrenching if you're into the morbidity and preposterousness of what the Republican Party stands for these days.

By the way, great picture!

I hardly think so. I'm just not categorizing him as the same sociopathic nut-job as Newt Gingrich. Adulterous, yes, there's a comparison. But until John Edwards claims his patriotism caused his adulterous ways, like the Gingrich is trying to pawn off on the American people as something noble and admirable, let's not even compare the two. To do so is disingenuous at best.

Poor Elizabeth, I believe was John Edward's late wife's name, suffering from cancer, eulogized at her funeral. But isn't this the big difference in Edward's case not that most of us are no Victorian moral saints, but just the facts, I believe Edward's wife was bedridden and sick while he is purported to have been cavorting about. That's gossip column stuff which I certainly don't keep up with but people aren't going to hold in high regard, someone who is cheating while their spouse is severely ill. That's perceived in a much different way than an extra marital affair.

I have not been a fan of the former Speaker. I doubt that is keeping him up at night with worry, that this Conservative finds him disagreeable on many counts. Just as I'm sure this news doesn't make Neo-Libs flush with joy.

However, there are things that are keeping me awake at night.

1.TOI reports that Col. Gaddafi has said the following in a letter dated March 2011, "To our son, his excellency, Mr Barack Hussein Obama. I have said to you before, that even if Libya and the United States of America enter into a war, god forbid, you will always remain a son. Your picture will not be changed."
2. Mr. Obama spring break vacation schedule has been released. Currently the entire First Family is in Brazil for his first one-on-one meeting with Brazilian President Rousseff. The Planned Press Conference canceled.
In May,Mr. Obama will travel to Ireland to visit the economic powerhouse of Europe and to visit the land of his mother's family.
3. The administration’s anti-bullying campaign has been ongoing since the beginning of Mr. Obama’s term. The Department of Justice announced in December 2010 its intention to hold liable school districts that fail to protect students that are bullied. But while all "animals are equal, some animals are more equal" because the DOJ will only investigate bullying cases if the victim is considered protected under the 1964 Civil Rights legislation. In essence, only discrimination against a victim’s race, sex, national origin, disability, or religion will be considered by DOJ.

To close for now, while the Neo-Libs are wrapped up in their concern about Gingrich, gas prices are heading to $4.00 a gallon (GWB's fault, again?), our unemployment numbers are not improving (international corporations fault?), there is major unrest in the Middle East, (Israel's to blame for this one) our President is traveling the Planet at our expense and sharing with us his March Madness picks.

And the Neo-LIbs are talking about the Former Speaker of the House?

Cant think of a better way to spend my day off from work than to review how much I've already had taken from me in the form of taxes and to then see how much more is owed.

I'll share this with you Mary, I do not believe the destruction of the middle class will be due to anti Union actions, but will be due to increased taxes.

Joseph Welch's question to Joe McCarthy during the Army-McCarthy hearings is one that comes to mind when I hear of Newt's gall when he is trying to excuse his actions. It is: "Have you no sense of decency, Sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?"

That's what they are for. There are literally days of planning and all kinds of rules that go into a t-hawik strike. You have to practice a lot. I've been real sick today so I don't know what other kind of weaponry we've got going on.

@ anonymous they were not launching t-hawks when I asked you that question and you know this. T-hawk launching in top secret so we don't find out until after unless something leaks.

Boltok, I really hate to belabor this old subject, but you need to educate yourself before you make stupid statements. Look up the definition of murder and manslaughter in your dictionary. You will find that murder is the PREMEDITATED taking of another's life. Manslaughter is the killing of another person.

Kennedy did not plan to kill Mary Jo Kopecni. It was an accident caused by Ted Kennedy's speeding when drunk. I am not defending his actions. As I said, he behaved in a cowardly way, but it is not murder, nor does it fit the d3efinition of manslaughter.

Hey, Abortionists, South Dakota is it's own STATE, so you all should stay out.

Stay in Union ruined Michigan or Politically corrupt Illinois, South Dakota shouldn't be all messed up like these states. Same thing for Aryan Huffington and the garbagge propoganda coming out against Arizona.

State's Rights, you don't like it?? Don't you go!!!

Let's see women's rights under Islamic Law! I've seen a woman in the full veil. And only a place for the eyes to see out of.

Palestinian Terrorist worms by the way, injured about 20 people this morning with a bomb near a bus in Israel and the Hezbollah or whatever it is called has been lobbing missiles at Israel.

All people who read the news would know this. Just in the past 24 years.

To all you lefthanders that criticize Gingrich. The attraction is his clear message. If you stop and listen to them...objectively.

Even in the latest foray in accusing him of flip flopping it was a left handed trick to take excerpts out of context. Now contrast this with Obama who once again CHECKED OUT during a time of critical decision making. I am ever grateful that Obama was still running around on his native soil during the Cuban missile crisis...imagine where we would be today had Obama been in the White House in 62.
