Message to My Fellow White People

NOTE TO MINORITY READERS:
This posting is FOR WHITES ONLY. Nothing personal but there's a conversation to be had here and it doesn't concern you. If you're African American or Hispanic or Asian or Arab - SCRAM! Gail Collins wrote a particularly witty piece in today's New York Times about a town in North Dakota where the unemployment rate is at one percent. Go read that. You'll all be welcome back with open arms when I write my next piece. Now SCAT, ya hear?

**********

Okay, fellow Caucasians, now that we're alone, we need to have a good old-fashioned heart-to-heart. Four years ago America elected its first non-white president and - to be perfectly blunt with you - a lot of you folks have reacted to this new American reality a bit....Oh, how can I put this as delicately as possible....Well, let me put it to you this way: you're not taking it well, that's for damned sure! In fact since Inauguration day 2009, you've been in full-tilt, FREAK OUT mode. I mean, hell, judging by the overreaction of some people, you would think that the president and first lady were Charles Manson and Squeaky Fromme! A lot of white people are acting like this is the end of the world - and they're absolutely correct. We're coming to the end of the old world. Like it or not (and I kinda like it) we're about to enter a new world. Be brave. Grow up.

Now, let's all just take a deep b
reath....

My fellow crackers, someday in the not-too-distant future, we won't be in the majority anymore. In fact that day will come within the lifespan of most of you who are now readin
g this. I know this must be a bitter pill for some of you to swallow - but that's the way it is and there's nothing we can do to alter the unalterable . There has been such an insane, mass hissy-fit over the fact that, for the first time in history, a black family is living in the family quarters (as opposed to the servants quarters) of the White House. Honestly, we really need to get a grip here, folks.

OCCUPY THE "WHITE" HOUSE!

Within a couple of
months of President Obama's moving into the Executive Mansion, a movement was formed by some of you knuckleheads for no other reason than to counter this major, sociological shift in the American political landscape. I'm referring to the so called "Tea Party" mob. You know who you are! Your reaction to this moderate administration (referring to it as "socialist" for instance) has teetered between the absurd and the comical. Well, I've got good news and bad news for you....

THE GOOD NEWS: Your reaction to this administration's very existence has been so insanely stupid, I fear it will be another generation or so before reasonable people dare to elect another person of color to the presidency.

THE BAD NEWS: By the end of this century - maybe even half-way into this century - a lily-white chief executiv
e will be as rare as an 8-Track tape player in a Chevy Volt.

White America, we need to come to terms with the future. We've got to stop living in this silly state of denial. What are we so afraid of? Why are we so paranoid? We have nothing to fear. Absolutely nothing! It's not like we spent the last four-hundred years being anything but benevolent and humanitarian keepers to our black brothers and sisters....

Let me rephrase that....

We should not expect them to be as cruel and as stupid as most of us were for all of the centuries we ran things. And besides, at least we never tried to deny them full participation in our democracy! And it's not as if we refused them the opportunity for a good and decent education....

Oh dear....

"Someday there will be an all-black judge and an all-black jury and then....'Shit! They're all black! HOW THE HELL AM I GONNA GET A FAIR SHAKE WITH AN ALL-BLACK JURY???' You're not. Ha! Ha! There's gonna be alotta dues, Jim!"

 -Lenny Bruce

Oh, the sun shines bright on mah ol' Kentucky home
'Tis summer and the honkies are gay....

I was just kidding. Lenny was just kidding, too. The thing is, some of us have a little more
faith in the essential humanity of our darker skinned siblings than some of you do. Not to worry; you'll find out what I'm talking about soon enough. In a couple of decades the Great White Father of old will be showing us the menu and busing our tables. That indeed is something to look forward to. Mah! Mah! The ol' plantation sho' has changed!

God gave Noah the rainbow sign
No more water
The fire next time

-James Baldwin

It's sad
that people who are not white need to wait until they are no longer "minorities" in order to receive equal protection under the law (At present they don't have that protection - and you're kidding yourselves if you think that they do. Just look at the prison population). But as long as they have waited, I don't think they'll have to wait much longer. As uncle Bobby said, "The old world is rapidly fading. Please get out of the new one if you can't lend a hand". Or as Sam Cooke sang nearly fifty years ago, "a change is gonna come". Sam didn't live to see that change. Bob Dylan probably will live to see it. In fact, we're damned-near there. We have no other choice but to accept it. The history of the next century will primarily be the story of how well (or badly) white America dealt with that inevitable change. Deal with it well, my friends. History will smile upon you.

Aw, c'mon, cheer up! It won't be so bad, I promise!

By the way, who could be whiter than Willard? I am so psyched for the upcoming debates. President Obama is going to wipe the floor with him. It would be interesting if Mittenhead chose Rubio for VP,but I think the Teatards would find that hard to swallow.

My eldest daughter has bi-racial children. One day my eldest grand daughter wanted something at the store and was told no. She yells in front of all these Black women; "I hate you, I want a black mama!" My daughter doesn't miss a beat and says "sure okay, but I am your white mama when you want something". This is the case with our bi-racial President. He is "white" when they want something.

Tom,

Well what exactly is your point?

At 9:51 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Tom,

You seem to assume that anyone who disagrees with Obama does so because of his race, (what ever it is). Does this mean that those who disagree with him who are non-white are doing so for the same reason?
The problem I have with our first ever half white/half black president is not racial make up. But his non successful policy's.
An example, his stimulus plan. It was for all those shovel ready jobs, like to repair our highways and bridges. It's didn't happen.
His affordable health care act, supposed to save money and not effect Medicare. That is exactly what is NOT happening.
The President's race (what ever it is) are the least of my concerns. It's his policy's that I'm concerned with.

Seriously Gail Collins piece was confusing I didn't even get what she was pointing at . ND had 1% unemployment but it's not perfect?

As for the demographics I'm fine with whites not being the majority but can we stop giving food stamps to illegal aliens?

The point of this piece is that, whether or not he is reelected in the Autumn, Barack Obama's presidency is not a freak accident but the wave of the future. He may be the first black president but he's not the last. Far from it.

Cheers!

Tom

@Patricia

Obama could debate in 08 with his "vision" of a fairy tell America. Now he's got his own record to deal with. even against Mitt He'll have a tough time defending an 8.2% unemployment rate and skyrocketing defecit. What's wrong with Mitt Romney being white. really? Are his ideas / beliefs any less valid than if he were black? And I'm sure the tea party would like Marco Rubio as VP. HE IS ONE OF THEM!

So Tom, the point of this post is to tell us what we already know and really don't care about? Who cares which race is tha majority? Based on your post, it sounds like only liberals are.

"Who cares which race is the majority?"

You're joking, right? Have you even been paying attention to the dialogue out there? You really ought to. Seriously.

Tom

At 2:12 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Tell me who talks more about race, Eric Holder or Mitt Romney? Do you see race as an issue brought up more by Msnbc or Fox? Is race brought more by members of the Black Cacus or members of the GOP?
Who makes an issue more often, Maxine Waters or any white republican?
Why is Obama creating a cabinet position to deal with black only issues? It's about race. Why does he think this position is needed after all the racially based anti discrimination laws have been pasted?
It is the liberals who are consumed with the issue of what a persons skin color is, so much so that they require a system be used to identify a persons race when applying for a federal loan.
Tom, the real question is why have you only listened to the dialog of liberals to form your belief that any one cares about race?

Since when did anyone from the cbc hve anything quoted by anyone in the media?
Any white republican (duh)
You have no idea what it takes to create a cabinet position do you? Oh and since you're so sure of this whats the Name of this suppposed agency?
Liberals are consumed with the ideals of fairness and justice. Skin color is irrelevant. Even yours.
Because the dialog of conservatives is predicated in selfishness and bigotry.

At 4:23 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Teqnopagen,
If the dialog of conservatives is as you claim, how does that interface with Tom's idea that whites better get used to being a minority?

How do handle the fact that conservatives are not all white? Are they really white? Why does it matter to you in the first place what color a person is?

Sounds again like the liberal has a bigotry problem and is focused on race in an attempt to cover it up

There is only one race on this planet earth, it is called 'man'. Anything outside of that is made up difference so that one organization of people can have control over another. It is no different with religion, or political affiliation, or gender or any number of separations of influence. The whole idea behind all of it is to exclude one portion of society to the benefit of another.
To put it frankly, people are either compassionate and empathetic beings, or they are greedy murderous assholes. Sure there are gray lines in between, but let's not act like sane, competent men don't know the difference between right and wrong.

There is only one law in all the universe: do no harm to life.

Ram Dass teaches Love everyone and tell the Truth. That still falls into the above.

Society teaches Take what you can no matter who dies. Make a million bucks on the ashes of millions.

Are we of God, or are we of society? All Federal employees are 'of society'. A great many people outside of that are 'of society'. Consumerism goes a long way, maybe as far as consuming human flesh, or consuming human souls.

I could care less what color skin, or racial background, or anything else the Federal president is. They are all compromised puppet patsies looking to enrich master, self and peer. Humans are cattle. Cattle are commodities. They truly claim and believe that they have ownership over living men, and since living men aid that presumption, the cycle is a monster.

I have trouble giving any man with title credence, since I know from experience all men are just as FOS as I am. To have a man with the power to pass 'executive order', and upon command bring in a drone aircraft and blast me and my neighborhood to fragments without any lawful binding or censure, and the whole argument of mocha colored skin and a birth in Kenya gives little aid.

Race, political party, religion, gender, nationality, or any other method of separation are tools to be used against men. It does not matter the person sitting in the seat on high, history has shown that there is a hand behind it all and that person does what they are told or they are killed.

Federal is genocidal, as are all corporations, because a corporation has no emotions, no empathy, no heart or soul. Corporations are run by the corpus, the dead, and this president and all others in that land of the dead called DC are brain eating zombies hungry for a feast.

Ms. Berry also wrote in July of 2010: “Tainting the tea party movement with the charge of racism is proving to be an effective strategy for Democrats. There is no evidence that tea party adherents are any more racist than other Republicans, and indeed many other Americans.”

When whites are no longer the majority will the civil rights laws apply for them then?

"[A} study differentiated between political hate of Obama and racial hate, “In general, hate groups, fall into two categories—politics and hate speech. Hate groups indirectly spread hatred toward women and blacks by targeting the Obamas with racist and sexist rhetoric. Unflattering photos, comments and articles containing racist and sexist discourse frame the two negatively. While political pages offer some educational value by emphasizing the President and first lady’s political platform, hate pages primarily focus on personal characteristics such as their culture, dietary habits, attire and physical features. Users share derogatory comments about the two playing basketball, dancing and eating items such as watermelon and chitterlings. Animalistic photos depict Obama or his whole family as animals, particularly apes. Findings demonstrate historical stereotypes have made their way onto social media applications.”

--and more pertinent to this discussion --

"[The study] also debunked the excuse used by those who engage in racial attacks against the President and First Lady that they are being called racist because they disagree with Obama, “The groups often highlight the President and First Lady with features that are meant to be negative or funny such as beards, Afros, mustaches, gold teeth, do-rags and various costumes. Mrs. Obama is depicted as a masculine, unattractive ‘angry black woman.’ Most pictures are accompanied with a disrespectful caption. Most captions do not attack the president and first lady’s political views; instead, they attack them personally with racial slurs that build on racist historical narratives. The shocking nature of these pictures spur numerous comments and ‘likes.’”

I don't care what the racial make up of our future Presidents. Just as long as they are more qualified to lead our nation than Obama has proven to be. I do not believe that Obamas string of economic and international failures have anything to do with his race. The total disaster of the last four years is due to the inactment of his policy's.

At 5:56 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

As the Obama campaign struggles against powerful riptides of economic bad news, some of the president’s most fervent apologists have returned to the old habit of blaming all his political troubles on racism.

State Sen. Louise Lucas, one of the leaders of the official “Obama Truth Team” in the crucial swing state of Virginia, told a local radio show that Mitt Romney and his supporters won’t accept anyone “other than a white man in the White House.” She declared that she couldn’t conceive of any other reason that her fellow citizens might disapprove of the incumbent president. “All of the folks who are saying, ‘We don’t like Barack Obama,’ they can’t tell you any reason that they don’t…I absolutely believe it’s all about race, and for the first time in my life I’ve been able to convince my children finally that racism is alive and well.”

On a similar note, Huffington Post editor Howard Fineman condemned the Romney campaign for exploiting racial animosity to try to undermine Obama. “He is playing to, and has from the beginning of the campaign, playing to the kind of nativist base of the Tea Party,” he told the MSNBC audience of The Chris Matthews Show. “And by nativist I mean people who are in essence afraid of the world.”

And that blogging Obama brown noser Tom Degan said "Within a couple of months of President Obama's moving into the Executive Mansion, a movement was formed by some of you knuckleheads for no other reason than to counter this major, sociological shift in the American political landscape. Say Tom, old chap, this also happened with in a few months of Obama moving into the White House.

MOBILE, Ala. — A Freedom of Information Act request last week showed that the Department of Justice dropped a sexual abuse civil rights investigation the day after President Barack Obama’s inauguration, citing “conflict of interest.”

In 2009, Herman Thomas, a black Democratic judge who had been elected numerous times in an Alabama county with predominantly white and Republican population, saw what had been a promising career come to an abrupt halt after he was indicted on charges of sodomy, kidnapping, sex abuse, extortion, assault and ethics violations. According to the indictment, Thomas was accused of sexually abusing male inmates in exchange for leniency.

According to information received in the FOIA request by Lagniappe, a bi-weekly Mobile, Ala.-based alternative newspaper, an order was sent on Jan. 21, 2009, to drop the investigation citing an undisclosed “conflict of interest.” Ten of 11 pages were withheld in the returned FOIA request.

Though evidence against Thomas was strong, including one of the alleged victims’ semen being found on his office’s carpet, the Mobile County District Attorney’s office did not secure a full guilty verdict. The jury acquitted Thomas on major counts, and was gridlocked on others.

Despite the gridlocked charges, the trial judge directed a verdict on all counts in favor of Thomas.

But that finding did not mean Thomas had been fully cleared of the federal charges he could be facing on civil rights counts — at least that’s what the public thought at the time.

But as it turned out, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Alabama had dropped their investigation, even before the local trial had taken place.

It's not all racism. They don't hate him because he's black; they hate him because he's a Democrat. The Atwater Dogwhistle is just another warhorn to toot to rally the Base against him. And, oh how well it works. Trump's fake campaign was almost entirely race-baiting based, and for a while the Base ate it up. Gingrich's, too. The Southern Strategy works, God help us all.
Anything to "Other" him, as happened to Clinton, and as will happen to any future Democratic party president, as a Democratic party victory, by definition, cannot be legitimate. Hence the cries of "Usurper!", "ACORN!", "New Black Panthers!", etc now (and "Whitewater!", "Vince Foster!" and "Boner!", before) .

Wow - instructive. I'm White and grew up in an extremely rural area. I never saw an African American until I was 14 - and never saw a Latino until I was 17. (then I went to college, and finished a post graduate education in a science related field - in full disclosure)

Yet I find it disingenuous beyond belief to read anything from anyone suggesting that a HUGE amount of the opposition to the President isn't based in racism. I've not only seen it (and can see it in these posts in some cases, together with its requisite verbal twists and apologies) but I've had it directly used in appeal to me since we are Obama voters by old White friends. "But you can't think that a Black man can actually do the job, why look at (fill in stereotypical choice of proofs that African Americans are ignorant, or lazy or whatever, with a superficial and generally false association with some program of Obama's)."

I've news for you, the only president more effective in my lifetime was Bill Clinton, and he didn't have to contend with someone else's quasi depression. And yes, using a racial stereo-type and then associating it with Obama and then saying "and of course he's a socialist" doesn't make it even vaguely political discourse; anymore than telling me you have a black friend (something that in several cases I seriously doubt) keeps you from being a racist.

Regards

I love how liberals are either stupid or just amazingly ignorant of racial realities in this country.

Between the numerous black gangs attacking white people in every city of America and the specific examples of the Wisconsin State Fair, Iowa State Fair and Peoria, Illinois, we have more than started the Jim Crow period against white people, and the media is fully complicit.

and besides, the way black people in "sunset" towns survive is by telling themselves "at least I am not that white guy in downtown Detroit".

You got yourself some crazy comments from some of your fellow crackers here, Tom. The fact that you irked those readers makes me love this brilliant post even more!

Anonymous, I can't decide if you are a racist or just the most ignorant person in America. Maybe you're both. Clearly there is something seriously wrong with you. WTF are you talking about? Jim Crow period against white people! LOL!

Perhaps you should read up a bit on the history of Jim Crow. Oh I concede that there are some black folks who commit acts of violence against whites; mostly in the process of committing some other crime such as thievery but not merely because they hate white people. Unacceptable behavior but not unique to black people. White people just steal on a grander scale. Ask Madoff and all those folks on Wall Street.

Here's how you'll know that Jim Crow has arrived for white people.

1. Black people will hold the political offices at the state, local, and federal area and white people will not be allowed to hold office.

2. White people will have to pay a poll tax and pass a literacy test in order to vote.

3. When white people are walking down the sidewalk and encounter black people, you will need to step out in the street, tip your hat, say good morning or good evening ma'am or sir, and wait for the black people to pass.

4. You won't be allowed to eat inside any restaurant but you can purchase food at the back door of some places.

5. There will be no white people in any upper level positions in business.

6. If a white male looks at a back woman or dares speak to her, then her family members will come and drag him out of his house in the middle of the night, even if he's just a 14 year old boy, and beat and torture him so badly that his own mama can't recognize him. At the trial, an all black jury will acquit the killers and they will latter brag about their deed in a national magazine.

7. Hospitals, clinics, and all businesses will have have an entrance for Blacks only and Whites will only be allowed to enter facilities that provide a separate Whites only entrance and a separate area for whites to conduct their business in the facility. If no such arrangement is provided you can't come in at all.

8. Be careful to adhere to all rules, don't ever act uppity in front of black people or you may find yourself being dragged out of your house by folks wearing white sheets. If you're lucky they will just beat the crap out of you and if not, they will hang you from a tree. They may burn you a bit first or castrate you and then lynch you.

These are just a few highlights that will signal the implementation of Jim Crow against white people. There were far too many racists practices and laws to enumerate in a single list.

Besides, I recognize that I'm wasting my time because you are an ignorant, whiny, paranoid racist. Only an ignorant racist would propose that anything that black people have done is even partially equivalent to Jim Crow. Don't bother to respond because I will not engage in additional communication with you. I've already wasted far too much time on the inane braying of a total jackass.

Interesting perspective on this topic. It does fuel the fire for a very provocative and rousing discussion I will admit. Allow me to chime in if you will.

As for the subject of race relations it is quite apparent there are some growing pains that inexplicably still exist. Listen, I'll say this. As a group of people Blacks and Whites have been living on this continent for 400-500 years. No one is going anywhere! Until we accept that fact that Blacks aren't going back to Africa and Whites aren't going back to Europe we'll never be at peace with one another. We all are in this boat and we are riding it together so everyone needs to get over it!!!

To the individuals who argue the point that liberals suggest disagreeing with Obama makes you a racist, well to that I say that's absurd. No right minded individual would suggest that. There is nor should there be any problem if you disagree with the man over policy issues. That's fine. We live in a country where every man should be judged on his merits and if Obama is lacking in an area then all things being equal he should stand in account for his short comings, color aside. However what I have witnessed in 3 years is an incredibly disgusting display overtly negative vitriol and gross hyperbole over his presidency and his politics. I've read message statements on tea party websites referring to him as a "monkey" referring to Michelle as a "black baboon" and suggesting both should go back to Kenya where they belong. I've seen pics displayed with him dressed in grossly negative stereotypical African garb beating on a drum and holding a bananna. I've heard ridiculous accusations hurled at him tainting him as a socialist, when in fact the healthcare reform act he signed into law modeled what the republicans proposed years ago. It was one in which he compromised the original bill by removing the public option. His opponents have misrepresented the legislation with their "death panel" nonsense and labeled him a Muslim. As if his religious affiliation had any bearing on his qualifications to serve in office.

I don't always agree with his policies. As a matter of fact I find myself disagreeing with him more often than not. My social views are far more conservative than liberal but after listening the poisonous venom spueing from the mouth of his opposition there is no way I would ever affiliate myself with the right wing of an off the edge republican party.

As for those of you who support Mitt, all I can say to that is good luck! When you review his track record at Bain Capitol I would be frightened of this man's economic plan. This is the same guy who Rick Santorum said was, "The worst republican to put into the nomination." Gov. Rick Perry called him a "Vulture capitolist" Now suddenly he's your guy for the job? Really?

Great piece, Tom, but I was a little confused by the comments section. Some questions demanded airing:

1. Are there many people named Anon Ymous or does old Anon simply have a lot of time on his hands?

2. Does the entire Ymous clan eat venom for breakfast, or were they just born that way?

3. Instead of CAPTCHA, have you considered requesting that folks use their real names? Even creatively deceitful names would be an improvement. Anon could call himself Veeblefester, for example, and add a little levity to his ponderous jeremiads.

4. Why is one part of every CAPTCHA impossible to read?

5. Will you keep writing forever, please? I only discovered your site recently (stumbled across "The Ryan Factor" post dated Sunday, August 12, 2012, and that surely was a treat) and am working myself through the archives. Here's the deal, if you ever stop writing, then I will be deprived of significant intellectual inspiration ... and Anon will have to find someone else to bedevil. Surely you don't want that.

Wonderfully said. I am glad you make clear that our karma is not good. We have not treated other minorities well, to say the least. But I do not think they will reciprocate. They are much nicer than we were. I think they will be happy to live in peace. I am so glad you had this talk with white people, and I hope they listen to you because it's coming, ready or not.

Nice blog you have there, Greta. I think you might get a kick out of this piece I wrote six years ago. But for the fact that George W. Bush is no longer president (THANK GOD!) it's still pretty relevant:
